5 Signs Your Siding is Failing (and How It Affects Your Roof)

When you look at your home’s exterior, you probably see two separate things: the roof on top and the siding on the walls. But in the world of construction, these two systems are intimately connected.

Your siding is the first line of defense for your walls, just as shingles are for your attic. When siding fails, it doesn’t just look ugly—it allows moisture to rot the structural studs of your home and can even compromise the edge of your roof.

At Paws Roofing Contractors, we often find that a “leaky roof” is actually a siding issue in disguise. Here are 5 warning signs that your siding has reached the end of its life.

1. Warped or Melted Panels

Vinyl siding is durable, but it isn’t invincible. If you walk around your house and see panels that look wavy or buckled, it is a sign of trouble.

This can happen for two reasons:

  • Heat Damage: Placing a BBQ grill too close to the house can melt the vinyl.
  • Poor Installation: Vinyl needs to expand and contract with Illinois temperature swings. If the previous installer nailed it too tightly, the siding will buckle when it gets hot in July, breaking the water seal.

2. The Fascia & Soffit Rot (The Roof Killer)

This is the most critical connection point. The fascia is the board that runs along the edge of your roof (where the gutters hang). The soffit is the underside of that overhang.

If your siding isn’t properly flashed where it meets the roofline, water can wick upward or behind the fascia. We frequently see rotting fascia boards that eventually cause the gutters to fall off and the bottom row of shingles to curl. You cannot have a healthy roof with rotting fascia.

3. Peeling Paint or Wallpaper Inside Your Home

Sometimes the sign of bad siding is actually inside your house.

If you notice paint bubbling or wallpaper peeling on an exterior wall (and there are no plumbing pipes nearby), it is likely that your siding is allowing driven rain to penetrate the wall cavity. By the time you see damage on the drywall, the insulation inside the wall might already be soaked.

4. High Heating and Cooling Bills

If your roof is the hat, your siding is the winter coat. If that coat has holes in it, you are going to freeze.

Old aluminum or wood siding offers very little insulation (R-value). Modern vinyl siding often comes with insulated backing that acts as a thermal blanket for your home. If your energy bills in East Peoria are spiking, upgrading your siding is one of the fastest ways to lower them.

5. Mold, Mildew, and Fungus

Take a look at the north side of your home (the side that gets the least sun). Do you see green, gray, or white spots?

While some surface dirt is normal, persistent mold growth can indicate that moisture is being trapped behind the siding panels. If you see fungus growing out of the seams of wood siding, it means the wood is rotting and holding water against your home’s frame.

Don’t Just Cover It Up

A fresh coat of paint might hide the rot for a year, but it won’t stop the damage. If you spot these signs, you need a professional inspection.
